چکیده

MEASUREMENT of pulmonary vascular resistance has frequently been used in the study of vasoactive drugs to indicate changes in pulmonary vascular tone.' However, as pointed out by Borst et al. 4 and Fowler, it is not possible in many of these studies to separate vasoactive drug effects from purely mechanical effects resulting from changes in transmural pressure,* and lung volume. It is the purpose of this study to separate these two effects by using a method applicable to intact animals and man. Pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) is defined as the ratio of the mean pressure drop across the pulmonary vascular bed to the mean blood flow through the bed. PVR depends on the geometry of the vascular bed and the physical properties of the blood. The geometry of the vascular bed is related to the volume of the lung as well as to the distribution of transmural pressure along the vessels, the number of parallel vessels that are open, and the physical properties of the vessel walls." Most vasoactive drugs will affect the intravascular pressure, the blood flow, and the properties of the vessel walls. Assuming the physical properties of the blood to remain constant, it should be possible to infer the vasoactive effect of a drug on the pulmonary vasculatnre from measurement of PVR, provided the lung volume and transmural pressures are held constant.

Some regulatory mechanisms of the human pulmonary vascular bed.

THERE IS still a question regarding the presence of active mechanisms of control for the pulmonary vessels in man. The controversy continues, since evidence for active vasomotion has usually been indirect. Because, in the past, it has been assumed that changes in pulmonary vascular resistance necessarily reflect changes in pulmonary vascular caliber, workers have drawn conflicting conclusions f...

Sustained Hypoxic Pulmonary Vasoconstriction in the Isolated Perfused Rat Lung: Effect of α1-adrenergic Receptor Agonist

Background: Alveolar hypoxia induces monophasic pulmonary vasoconstriction in vivo, biphasic vasoconstriction in the isolated pulmonary artery, and controversial responses in the isolated perfused lung. Pulmonary vascular responses to sustained alveolar hypoxia have not been addressed in the isolated perfused rat lung. In this study, we investigated the effect of sustained hypoxic ventilation o...

Effect of alveolar liquid on distribution of blood flow in dog lungs.

Previous studies have shown that a shift in blood flow away from edematous regions does not occur until the alveoli contain liquid. The present experiments were designed to examine the separate effect of air space liquid, air space plus interstitial liquid, and reduced lung volume on blood flow. We found that reduced lung volume was not associated with significant changes in blood flow and that...

Influence of lung volume on pulmonary microvascular pressure-volume characteristics.

The pressure-volume (P-V) characteristics of the lung microcirculation are important determinants of the pattern of pulmonary perfusion and of red and white cell transit times. Using diffuse light scattering, we measured capillary P-V loops in seven excised perfused dog lobes at four lung volumes, from functional residual capacity (FRC) to total lung capacity (TLC), over a wide range of vascula...
